What the fuck is this bullshit? Of course they can detain you. Just like you can detain a person who stole your wallet. You just have to catch them outside store (so they can’t say that they were about to pay) and have evidence (thus why cameras are everywhere in the stores). You can only use reasonable force and detain them only for reasonable time nor can you do cop things like body search and confiscate items. And yes, this is U.S law that is actually surprisingly similar to my country’s laws. Security guards are indeed just common working citizens, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the same rights.
I don’t know who this Griffin guy is, but it’s obvious he’s either full of shit or trolling.
